I’m a friend of Hayward friends library because i found Chris Ferreira on here. I was her former student for sixth grade.

Love our lovely library. Life has thrown us a few curveballs lately but we shall be back!

Hayward Library is a stunning place to relax, study, learn, and engage.

I’m a Friend to the Library because my kids enjoy the crafting programs and because I’m so proud of Hayward’s beautiful new library!

I am a Friend of the Hayward Library for many reasons. As a child, I spent much of my life reading at the Hayward library. As an adult, I have been involved in literacy efforts and the love of reading. My cousins, Jim and Muriel Sampson have been involved in your library Friends for years. This donation was made in memory of Jim, but also the memory of the integral part your library made in my own love of books, reading and library service in the community.

I support Hayward Libraries because I believe education must be accessible to all for a better community.

There is nothing like the texture of the pages of a book. Reading a book allows your mind to explore and encourages your imagination to soar.

I have always believed in the power of reading. You can learn most anything from books. That is why the Hayward public library has played such an important part in my life and especially the lives of my children. When they were young I would take them to all the events and as soon as they could they started volunteering their summers. Two of my kids worked at the library. One still does. I have so many memories of my kids at the library.

Libraries have been places of imagination, learning, and peace since my first library card at 4 years old. I have never been without a library and want to make sure that libraries remain part of our community for all children and adults.

I love reading, and libraries are accessible to everyone, so al can enjoy and learn.

I moved to Hayward 13 years ago; since then, I have fallen completely in love with this community. It’s the first place in the U. S. that has felt like home. I’m proud of my city, and excited about the beautiful new library!

The Hayward Library was my magical place as a child. Glad to support it as an adult.

The Friends make a huge chunk of their money from book sales. Since the library is closed they are not making that chunk of money. Some of the Friends money goes towards the summer reading program, literacy, and book clubs. If you are able, please support them.

The library is a great source for knowledge and community. Give back if you can.

Libraries are the great equalizer to boost us all up together in learning and communication.

I’m a Friend of the new Hayward Library because I want to see it serve the people of Hayward on both Saturday and Sunday. Those are the only days many working residents of Hayward can go to the library. We’ll soon see whether the powers that be in Hayward are going to serve the residents, or allow some of the staff to dictate keeping the library open only when it’s convenient for the staff.

I’m a friend of Hayward Library because knowledge will help our community thrive. Investing in a great library will definitely be very positive for Hayward.

I can’t wait to bring my daughter in for her first library card!

Library books took me on amazing adventures as a child. As an adult, they enable me to achieve great things. Now I see the joy in my child’s eyes when she opens up a new book. I want to share free access to books with everyone young and old.

Knowledge is power.

My mom worked on behalf of the library and encouraged us to visit often. I remember watching the HG Wells movie, The Time Machine.with her.. When George pulls back a curtain and finds books crumbling into dust, never to have a page turned again she looked at me and said that this is why we must have a library. How wonderful that our library will keep books alive for all of us.

I have made several presentations to the Hayward City Council, in particular supporting the efforts to build the new library. Here is a copy of the presentation I made on July 16, 2013 which pretty much sums up why I am a friend of the Hayward Library.

COMMENTS OF PHILIP ROBERTS REGARDING THE PROPOSED NEW DOWNTOWN LIBRARY & COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER

Hayward City Council Meeting, July 16, 2013

My name is Philip Roberts, and my Hayward address is 3565 Star Ridge Road. I have lived in Hayward for the past 44 years. I am a retired CEO of a Hayward­ based international aviation consulting company that I founded in 1981.

The report to the City Council regarding a " 21st Century Library & Community Learning Center supports a new expanded downtown library for Hayward, and is backed by 700 pages of analyses. It is an excellent document.

I would like to add my own view and experience for you to consider. The City of Hayward has been shown to be the most ethnically diverse community in all of California, and perhaps in all of the US. I don’t believe there is another facility in Hayward, public or private, other than our library, which brings us all together as a community.

I will give you an example. I am a volunteer tutor for our Homework Support Center. Last year, along with 150 other volunteers, we helped more than 1,200 students with their homework, two hours a day, four days a week. The Center began this valuable community service at our two libraries, Weeks and Downtown Main. In 2011 school year, we expanded to include a Center at Longwood Elementary School and this past year added Centers at Park and Harder schools. While I have helped out at all of these locations, I spend most of my time at Downtown Main.

While Library Staff are working with the Hayward Unified School district to include more school campuses in future years, the District has only 22 schools. The Hayward area has many more schools than this, since in the last school year, students from approximately 62 Hayward Area schools enrolled at our Downtown Main Library Homework Support Center. Typically at my homework table, students ask each other, “What school do you come from?” And they’ll say, All Saints, Bret Harte, Burbank, Redwood Christian, Stonebrae, Treeview or some other school. And in time, they become friends. For me, this melding of community is impressive, and one of the many reasons I volunteer as a tutor.

But, we are bursting at the seams. We desperately need more space. Our children need a much bigger library.

Hayward is the city my kids grew up in and it embraces my Hispanic culture…the library was another room in our home!

I was 17 years old when I came to this country. I spoke just basic English. From learning about my new home to academic milestones to professional achievements, the Hayward Public Library played a significant role at each stage: opening my mind, providing the right tools, and raising me to be a global citizen. Fun, wisdom, inspiration and adventure are never too far if you have access to a book! I am now a Friend of the Hayward Public Library, because I recognize that if the American Dream is the peak, then the trail must pass through a library at some point. It is now time for me to give back and help ensure that the next generation has the resources they need on their path to the American Dream.

Growing up, books or other reading material were always around our house: everyone in my family was an avid reader and some of my earliest memories involve holding story books. Children’s summer library reading challenge lists were completed long before the break was over as my siblings and I devoured all types of books from our local library. How many children hear from their mothers “Put down that book and go out and play!”? As an adult, a local library card was a priority every place I’ve lived as the military moved me around, and while visiting Washington DC the first time, I even made time to get a Library of Congress card!
